Accedia Masters – setting the bar high for chess tournaments nationwide

Last weekend marked the end of another very successful edition of Accedia Masters, the idea of Georgi Peltekov, Tournament Director and Engineering Director at Accedia. This edition saw over 70 participants fight for the competition’s titles in two separate tournaments – “Classic”, reserved only for 10 of the best in the game, and “IT” for IT professionals. Both featured memorable and complex games and were played by high international standards and regulations.

After a tough one-week battle, the winner of the “Classic” tournament, Martin Petrov, officially received the title of Grandmaster after achieving the needed threshold with his victory, making him Bulgaria’s newest bearer of the prestigious title.

The “IT”  tournament took place on 30th October with speeches by tournament officials, members of the Bulgarian Chess Federation, and the President of Bulgaria – Mr. Rumen Radev, whose move of the first pawn marked the official start of the battle. After a long day of hard-fought points and many complex strategies, the winners became clear. First place was taken by Jose Remolar Gallen, followed closely by Stoyan Ivanov in second place, and Hristo Stoyanov in third. The prizes and medals were awarded at the end of the day by another surprise guest star – Olympic medalist boxer Tervel Pulev. He admitted to also being a fan of chess and made a reference to boxing, saying the two sports are not as different as people would think. After the award ceremony, he also found time to play a game of chess with Georgi Peltekov – the tournament’s director.
